Mary at her studio door |
I have been painting in oils and pastels for over two decades and in that time I achieved recognition as a noted landscape artist. I took up printing to supplement my methods of work, completing a Diploma in Professional Printmaking at The Regional Print Centre, Yale College, Wrexham.
Much of my painting represents a meditative and peaceful quality of the varied landscape where I live, six miles from Oswestry, in the Borderlands of Mid Wales. I derive much inspiration from the area's rural history and landscape. The majority of my pastel work is painted in situ, to capture the atmosphere and true colours that I think are so vital.
I decided to include some sketches on this website because the people I meet whilst travelling are always interested in what I produce as quick drawings or visual notes. I work in pen with a tonal wash, which is quick and easy to carry about. My sketch book goes everywhere with me. I have an ambition to walk the length of Offa's Dyke, a foot path which runs between England and Wales, sketching along the way. I completed a 66 mile stretch last year and hope to finish the Northern Section to Prestatyn this summer.
My recent printing work has been concentrating on collagraphs and etchings based on historical landscapes. I took part in a project to make work for offices in Liverpool. Inspired by the history of the city I wanted to mark the historical development from a rural backwater to the international City that it is today. I exhibited my work in The Artist's Club and The Liverpool Medical Institution.
I am currently working on Sycharth, which is where Owain Glyndwr had his settlement in the 14th century. I intend to further my research into the historic site and work with a combination of mediums that represent the layers of history that lie forgotten beneath the ground. I have been invited by Denbighshire to exhibit the work in a solo show at Denbigh Library during March 2011.
